LCRW September 7, 2018 Luncheon Meeting

4 Speakers to Bring Their Voices to our next General Meeting

On Friday, September 7, the LCRW will host four speakers for our meeting. Each speaker is a candidate for various positions in the November election. We are excited to welcome them to share their views and opinions in regards to the office they are seeking. Take a quick read to learn a bit more about them! Take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about local candidates.

Candidate 2018Katrina ChaneyLCC Supt of Schools

Katrina Chaney was the supervising teacher for eight years at Trinity School, a rural multi-grade public school in Canyon Creek. Katrina has taught all grade levels, K – 9, in a variety of settings, for the past 30 years. She is now completing her first 4-year term as Lewis and Clark County Superintendent of Schools. She is passionate about her position and hopes to begin her second term in January.

Candidate 2018Julie Dooling for HD70Julie Dooling is a Financial Professional with the Sullivan Financial Group. She is one of 3 Republican Women candidates statewide who were successful in their contested primaries. She is a candidate for HD 70 and hopes to advance her current advocate role in Industry Associations (MSGA, NAIFA, etc.). She aims to continue to support at a higher level by working on legislation to implement positive changes for Agriculture, Natural Resources and working with the Commissioner of Securities and Insurance to allow Montanans more options for insurance and investment needs.

Candidates 2018Bob Leach for SD42

Bob Leach is a candidate for SD42 and a retired Maintenance Engineer who has been a Helena area resident since 1970. After prodding by his neighbors, Bob entered the political arena and is a candidate for Senate District 42. He’s concerned about Montana’s future and asks: we have fewer revenues so how do we balance the budget? How do we provide jobs and protect the environment at the same time? What’s the best way to keep our kids safe? His life experiences have brought him to looking for answers with a lot of questions attached!

Candidates 2018John Schmidt for SD41John Schmidt is a candidate for SD41. A new resident of Helena, John moved to Helena about 1½ years ago from Elko, Nevada. He is a former SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT and Finance and Controller, a position he held for 11 years with Office Depot. He is also a former small business owner and became a pastor about 20 years ago. Today he’s an adjunct instructor at Helena College where he teaches business and finance. He and his wife have 4 children with 1 living in Helena. While in Nevada, he served in various community assistance roles including police chaplain and member of the Nevada Governor’s Interagency Council on Homelessness.

LCRW MONTHLY MEETINGS are the 1st Friday each month. The meeting begins at 12:00 Noon. Our Location is: Green Meadow Country Club, 2720 Country Club Avenue, Helena MT.

Please plan for a punctual arrival at 11:30 AM on September 7… Buffet Lunch served as you arrive.

L&CRW Cyndi Forbes Memorial Scholarship

The Lewis & Clark Republican Women announces winners of our Sixth Annual Scholarship. The Lewis & Clark Republican Women’s Cyndi Forbes Memorial Scholarship Fund consists of a one-time award of a $1000 and a $500 scholarship available to a female high school senior high school graduate or equivalent who is a resident of Lewis & Clark, Broadwater, or Jefferson Counties and is either entering, currently enrolled, or is returning to an institution of higher education in Montana.

2018 LCRW SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

Makenzi Long, far right, a graduate from Helena High School, and Shaina Silvonen, far left, a graduate from Capital High School, have received Cyndi Forbes Memorial Scholarships from the Lewis and Clark Republican Women’s Club. Long received a $1,000 scholarship. She plans on attending Helena College, University of Montana and pursuing a career as a Registered Nurse. She is the daughter of Rob and Vicki Long. Silvonen, the daughter of Chris Silvonen and Jessica Silvonen, received a $500 scholarship and plans to attend Missoula College, University of Montana to pursue a career in Psychology/Counseling. Shirley Herrin, president of LCRW Club and John Forbes, scholarship benefactor and husband of Cyndi Forbes, presented the awards at the Green Meadow Country Club. Scholarship Winners2018

President, Shirley Herrin


President Shirley Herrin 2016Shirley has been active in Republican politics for decades, serving on innumerable campaigns throughout the years. She was the Executive Director/Western Division of the Bush-Quale “Victory 88” Campaign – President George Bush and Vice President Dan Quale.

The following is a synopsis of her activities:

> Served on the Board of Directors of the Lewis and Clark Republican Women’s Club (L&CRW) from 1983-1990 as a Director, 2nd and 1st Vice President and President. Re-elected President of L&CRW in November of 2016.
> Served as a Precinct Committeewoman and Vice Chair of the Lewis and Clark County Republican Central Committee (LCCRCC), and is currently serving as a Committeewoman for Precinct 24.
> Secretary of the Montana Federation of Republican Women from 1993-1997, and served as President of the organization in 2012-2013. Currently serving as Secretary
> Elected to serve as a Montana Alternate to the 2012 National GOP Convention in Tampa, FL
> Montana Capitol Restoration Foundation, current President
> Worked for various Montana State Departments
> Worked for the Montana Legislature through several decades
> Has served on the Montana Capitol Restoration Foundation since 1997 – is now Secretary
> Volunteer for the Montana Heritage Commission
> Trustee on the Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame Board
> Served seven years as Secretary for the Montana Saddle Clubs Association
> Served as Secretary/Treasurer, 1989-2005, of the Helena Trail Riders Saddle Club; currently serving as Treasurer
> Served on the Board of Directors of the Society of the Sons and Daughters of Montana Pioneers from 1996 – 2009, as a Director, Secretary/Treasurer, Vice President and President


Shirley is a fifth-generation Montanan and is the owner of a health business. She is a widow and mother of three sons and two daughters – grandmother of nine and she has two great-grandsons.
