Judge Nels Swandal is a candidate for Justice of the Montana Supreme Court. We have an opportunity to meet Judge Swandal, learn of his qualifications, and hear him speak of his values and philosophy when he comes to Polson August 26-27.

Thursday, August 26, Judge Swandal and his wife Debra will be at the Mission Bay Clubhouse from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for a “Meet and Greet “ reception hosted by Friends of Judge Swandal. This will be your opportunity to visit with the Swandals. Refreshments will be served. RSVP’s before Tuesday, August 24 are appreciated: pennymt@centurytel.net; 883-2248 or mjptrains@aol.net; 883-4446.

Friday, August 27, Judge Swandal will be the guest speaker at the regular meeting of the Lake County Pachyderm Club. The meeting will be held in the Community Room of the Polson City Library. Social time begins at 11:30 a.m.; bring a brown bag lunch. The meeting begins at 12 noon and ends at 1:00 p.m. This would be a good time to bring a friend to the meeting.

Why should we care about the selection of a Justice to the Montana Supreme Court?

• Any decision of the Montana Supreme Court amounts to creating law. Their decisions are just as binding on all citizens of the state the same way as any law passed by the Montana legislature.

• There are seven members of the Montana Supreme Court. Four of those members decide any case brought before the Court.

• Each Justice is elected to a six-year term. This is the longest term for any elected Montana official.

• There is a direct correlation between good government and an informed, engaged electorate.
